Profile and internal construction
Compare the cap or helmet silhouette before focusing on its badge. Interior sweatbands, liners, ventilation, stitching, size marks and fastening systems are often more diagnostic than the exterior.
Common alterations
- Replaced or added front insignia
- New sweatbands or chin straps
- Reblocked caps and reshaped crowns
- Repainted helmets and added decals
- Modern fur or lining repairs
Storage
Support soft caps with acid-free tissue. Avoid crushing peaks and crowns. Store steel helmets dry and do not oil painted surfaces without specialist guidance.
